Kenneth Johnston QC
BA, LLB, Victoria University of Wellington
LLM (Dist.), College of Law, London
Grad. Dip. HRM Victoria University, Wellington

February 1980

June 2016

Following a period practising criminal law in London, in March 1981 Ken joined the Wellington Office of Watts & Paterson, one of the three firms which subsequently merged to form Rudd Watts & Stone and which is now part of the Australasian Minter Ellison Group. He remained with that firm for 17 years, the last four as its National Managing Partner. He retired from the firm to join the independent bar in September 1997.

Ken has an exceptionally wide range of experience in criminal and civil work. He has experience as both a prosecutor and defence counsel in jury trials, and appellate criminal work. His civil work has included general civil and commercial litigation, trusts and estates, construction, employment, family and professional disciplinary litigation, again at first instance and at the appellate level. He now specialises in advisory work and major civil and commercial litigation and arbitration in the areas referred to.

Ken is a member of the New Zealand Law Society, the New Zealand Bar Association, AMINZ and LEADR. Between early 2005 and mid-2016 he was the Chair of the New Zealand Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal, and since mid-2014 he has been a Deputy Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. He is regularly appointed as an arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator in civil and commercial disputes. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at Victoria University where he teaches Ethics and Civil Procedure. He is the Chairman of Financial Services Complaints Ltd, a provider of dispute resolution services to the financial services sector, and serves on the boards of other commercial organisations.

Solicitors appreciate Ken’s ability to master complex cases quickly, provide astute, commercially-focused and practical guidance, establish and maintain good relationships with clients, successfully lead large multi-disciplinary teams in lengthy and difficult litigation and arbitration and focus on achieving the very best outcomes for clients.
