Following a period practising criminal law in London, in March 1981 Ken joined the Wellington Office of Watts & Paterson, one of the three firms which subsequently merged to form Rudd Watts & Stone and which is now part of the Australasian Minter Ellison Group. He remained with that firm for 17 years, the last four as its National Managing Partner. He retired from the firm to join the independent bar in September 1997.

Ken is a member of the New Zealand Law Society, the New Zealand Bar Association, AMINZ and LEADR. Between early 2005 and mid-2016 he was the Chair of the New Zealand Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal, and since mid-2014 he has been a Deputy Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. He is the Chairman of Financial Services Complaints Ltd, a provider of dispute resolution services to the financial services sector, and serves on the boards of other commercial organisations.
